Have you been looking for a way to hone or build your leadership and management skills? Are you a frontline operator with aspirations to one day lead your center? Are you a newly promoted supervisor who is looking for more training to become a better leader? Or, are you a center leader looking to develop your staff without wiping out your training budget? If so, this is your chance!

In an effort to promote the development of leaders at all levels of Missouri’s emergency communications profession, Missouri APCO is committed to growing the number of members who have achieved the Registered Public-Safety Leader (RPL) distinction through APCO International.

We are proud to announce that in 2022, Missouri APCO is issuing one scholarship for the tuition of a member’s RPL journey – a $995 value
This scholarship can only be applied towards the tuition. Any decision to attend the APCO Conference for the RPL recognition ceremony is at the expense of the student. This scholarship only covers the initial tuition. Recertification fees are at the expense of the student.

This scholarship may only be used for the following RPL start dates:
  • October 2022
  • November 2022
  • January 2023
  • February 2023
  • March 2023

What is RPL?

The RPL program is an intense, year-long program that requires time commitment each week. During the program, you will be expected to read course material, participate in class discussions, complete solo and group projects, and work on a year-long service project that must be approved by the program facilitator prior to acceptance into the program.

During the program you will learn to:
  • Manage organizations and change
  • Communicate with confidence and clarity
  • Develop your talent pool
  • Build connections and consensus
  • Enhance team performance
  • Make a difference within our association and profession
  • Apply the skill sets learned for the betterment of our association and profession

Am I Eligible?

In order to be accepted to the RPL program, you must meet some basic eligibility requirements. RPL is administered through the APCO Institute and will require an application to the program itself. Program eligibility requirements:
  • Be an APCO International member in good standing with a demonstrated record of service to our association and our industry.
  • Be willing and able to commit to completing and critiquing the program and requirements.
  • Be dedicated to accepting the challenge of ongoing professional development and service for the betterment of public safety communications.

In addition to these requirements, to be eligible for the scholarship you must:

  • Be a Missouri Chapter Member (if you’re receiving this email directly, you are!)
  • Work at a public safety communications agency in Missouri
  • Have three or more years of experience in the emergency communications profession
  • Be willing to become an involved member of the Missouri Chapter of APCO through committee work and/or other chapter involvement.
What Do I Need For This Application?

Our scholarship application is short, sweet and to the point. But it does require some thought and effort on your part! We ask that you put some thought and detail in your answer to the following six short essay questions. We’re not looking for eight-page essays, but we would like more than two or three sentences.

  • Describe your reason for applying for this scholarship.
  • What do you hope to achieve if you receive this scholarship?
  • Where do you see yourself professionally in five years?
  • Where do you see yourself professionally in ten years?
  • Describe any significant contribution you have made or would like to make to public safety communications.
  • If accepted into the RPL program, what would you like to do for your required service project?
In addition to these essay questions, you’ll need to submit your professional résumé and a letter of recommendation from your agency. You can find out more about this scholarship at https://moapco.org/training/mo-leaders-scholarship/
